Doctor John J. Gallivan House
The Gallivan House, located at 776
Washington Street, was built in 1930 by Braintree doctor, John J. Gallivan
(1898-1980), as a wedding present for his wife Dorothy. The Georgian-style
brick
structure was built by Fallon Brothers of Quincy and served as both a doctor’s
office and residence for the Gallivan family for many years. Dr. Gallivan was a
popular general practitioner who treated many of Braintree’s residents at his
home office until the 1960s, when he retired and sold the property to Dr. Leo
Flanagan, a dentist who also practiced in the house. In March 2005, the
Braintree Historical Society acquired the Gallivan House and is in the process
of trying to restore it to the period of the 1930s. We would gratefully accept
donations of both money and 1930s period items, especially furniture, as we work
towards this goal. To donate, please call 781-848-1640.
Dr. John Gallivan
John Joseph Gallivan (1898-1980) was born in Braintree, the second child of
John F. and Bridget (O’Quinn) Gallivan. He was educated in the Braintree public
schools before attending Boston College and Tufts Medical School. On October 1,
1932, he married Dorothy W. Dee (1908-1997) and settled in Braintree, where they
raised their three children and he ran his practice out of their house at 776
Washington Street. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Gallivan also
worked at the Weymouth and South Shore hospitals, and served as Assistant
Medical Examiner for Norfolk County from 1940 until he retired in the 1960s. He
was also active in several local community organizations, including the
Braintree Rotary Club and the Knights of Columbus.
